The History Of Spritz 🍊
So, where did the much-loved Spritz come from?
Spritzes originated from the Venice and Veneto regions of Northern Italy at the end of the 19th Century. During Austrian rule, soldiers and officials stationed in northern Italy found local wines stronger than they were used to and would dilute Italian wines with a “Spritz” (German word for "Splash") of soda water to make them lighter and more to their taste. Over time, the simple mix of wine and water evolved. By the 20th century, sparkling water, Prosecco, and Italian bitters such as Aperol, Select, and Campari were added, creating the refreshing cocktail we know and love! 🧡

Traditionally, the Spritz is used as an aperitivo. The cocktail is designed to be a light, bittersweet, and bubbly drink consumed before a meal to stimulate the appetite and refresh the palette. Becoming popular in the 2010s and 2020s with social media and pop culture, countless creative variations have joined the Spritz family, making it a staple on cocktail menus around the world.
